Rosacea: prevention, treatment, specialist who treats it and prognosis

Rosacea is a dermatological condition that affects thousands of people around the world without distinction of sex or age. Often the first time it appears, you don't know what rosacea is or why it appears.

However, for people who have suffered from it before, it is an annoying ailment that creates problems of insecurity in the image. If you are asking if it can be prevented or treated, in the following lines we will answer these and more questions.

Rosacea, can it be prevented?

We are sorry to tell you that no, it cannot be prevented. But if you can discover the triggers of it and avoid them. At the same time, the most usual thing is that the specialist doctor also elaborates a specific treatment for rosacea and that this is evaluated and updated after a certain time.

Normally, to prevent or reduce the severity of this condition, the doctor will ask you to keep your skin well hydrated, to avoid products that can irritate it, to protect your skin from the sun, that the makeup you use is adapted to your skin type and that the shampoos and gels with which you wash your hair are gentle on your skin.

Which specialist treats rosacea

Being a dermatological condition, the most indicated doctors to diagnose it and prescribe a treatment are dermatologists. In addition, the dermatologist can discover how mild or severe your condition is and the prognosis that you will have once you start treatment.

If rosacea is also affecting other parts of the body such as the eyes, it is best to go to an ophthalmologist and, to both specialists, inform them of the treatments they are administering to you.

Treatment for rosacea

Rosacea treatment focuses on controlling the signs of this skin ailment. Patients often just need to take good care of their skin and take certain medications. Normally, dermatologists will prescribe one of these 3 types of medications:

  1. Topical Redness Medications: For mild to moderate rosacea, your dermatologist may ask you to use gels or creams containing brimonidine or oxymetazoline that narrow the blood vessels and reduce redness. The effect is temporary so it must be administered frequently for the action to be sustained.
  2. Medications to control pimples: This type of medicine has less effect on redness, but it helps you control the appearance of pimples and includes azaleic acid, metronidazole and ivermectin. With the first two you will not see improvements for at least two weeks, but its remission is longer than with ivermectin.
  3. Creams containing CBD: these are special ointments that soothe the skin and relieve pain locally. All the elements that make up these creams are natural so they have no side effects. In addition, as they are absorbed through the skin, they do not reach the blood and there is no risk of poisoning.
  4. Oral antibiotics: the doctor will prescribe it in the case of moderate or severe rosacea. Usually the antibiotic will be doxycycline.
  5. Acne medication: If you have a severe type of rosacea that does not respond to other treatments, your dermatologist will tell you to take isotretinoin, a powerful medicine that will help clear acne while treating rosacea lesions. If you are pregnant, do not take this medicine as it can cause serious birth defects.

Do not take non-prescription medications and always ask your doctor for his opinion before starting a treatment.

If you prefer other types of therapies to treat rosacea, you can opt for laser and light-based rosacea treatments that will reduce the redness of the blood vessels. You may need to repeat phototherapy sessions for long-lasting results.

Home remedies for rosacea

In recent years, more and more people have opted for medicines and treatments of natural origin, because they have no side effects. These strategies can include maintaining a balanced diet and using homemade products to relieve rosacea symptoms.

Some of them are:

  1. Chamomile: it is a highly known anti-inflammatory that, in addition, heals infections and skin lesions. Apply it cleansed to the face. The infusion should be composed of a teaspoon of chamomile flowers and a few glasses of water.
  2. Apple cider vinegar: ideal for cleaning the face if you have rosacea, since its properties help balance the skin. Dilute a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in water and apply it with a clean cotton ball.
  3. Diet rich in vitamins: not only is it enough that your diet is balanced, it also has to be rich in vitamins, especially vitamins B and C, because the first one strengthens and heals the skin, while the second helps to heal and maintains a good functioning of the defenses. You will find vitamin B in legumes and fish and C in citrus foods.
  4. Protect yourself from the sun and drink water: an easy way to hydrate your skin is by drinking water. Experts recommend drinking around 2 liters a day. Also, as your skin is more sensitive due to the presence of rosacea, you should spare no effort in protecting it from the sun's rays.

Rosacea prognosis

Rosacea usually has a good prognosis, although for this it must be treated early, otherwise it can limit your life. If the inflammation of the skin is sustained over time and is not treated, it can cause deformities and permanent alterations.

The level of care you need to take with your skin will depend on the severity of the injury.
